Engine Mechanical problem

1997 Ford E-Series Van   Two Wheel Drive Automatic 220200 miles



I have a 1997 E350 w/6.8 triton. The Exhaust Cat and muffler gets red hot. I replaced the cat as it colapsed inside as did the muffler. I found on other vehicles if the "y' pipe is red hot, the engine is running too lean. In this application the inside of the exhaust is black(Rich?). The engine is sluggish and idles rough. Could this be a fuel pump problem?
